SPREAD · BID/ASK

Why do forex spreads suddenly widen?

A wider quote changes trading costs and can affect stop triggers. Separate the market conditions, the quote you see and the price at which an order actually fills.

Educational information, not a trading recommendation. Check your own account and instrument specifications. This guide does not verify an individual execution or promise compensation.

Why can the spread become wider?

A variable spread can widen when available liquidity falls or uncertainty rises, including around market openings, rollover and important news. The spread is Ask minus Bid. A wider gap alone does not prove that a particular quote or fill was correct or incorrect.

Which conditions matter?

News and thin markets can change the prices available to trade; the effect depends on the instrument and account.

ConditionWhat to check
Economic releases or unexpected newsThe event time and both sides of the quote, not just the candle.
Market opening, closing or daily rolloverThe instrument's trading schedule and the broker's server time.
Holidays and quiet sessionsWhether normal market participation and trading hours have changed.

TMGM's spread explainer describes liquidity and volatility as factors. OANDA's spread guidance also describes widening around openings, closings and news. These explanations do not establish a maximum spread or a guaranteed time for it to narrow.

Are points and pips interchangeable?

No: check the quoted unit before comparing numbers. MetaTrader 5 specifications display spread in points and list the symbol's decimal precision.

For an arithmetic example, assume Bid 1.10000 and Ask 1.10020, a point of 0.00001 and a pip of 0.0001. The gap is 0.00020: 20 points or 2 pips under those assumptions. This is not a live quote, and the conversion must not be copied to every symbol.

See MetaTrader 5 Market Watch for quote fields and specifications. Use the trading-cost guide to compare monetary costs.

Can a stop trigger when the candle does not reach it?

It can if the candle and stop condition use different prices. For the OTC forex rules described by MetaTrader 5, long-position stop conditions use Bid and short-position conditions use Ask.

An Ask-based short stop can therefore trigger while a Bid chart appears below the stop level. Check the historical Ask and the chart mode. Some exchange instruments use different trigger rules, commonly Last; the symbol's rules take priority.

Spread and slippage are separate checks: spread compares simultaneous Bid and Ask; slippage compares a reference price with the eventual fill. A trigger price is not itself evidence of the fill price. See MetaTrader 5 order principles.

How should you check an unexpected quote or fill?

Build a record of the event before drawing a conclusion.

  1. Record the symbol, account type, server time and simultaneous Bid/Ask.
  2. Confirm that quotes were updating and check the symbol's spread units and chart mode.
  3. Compare the order direction, trigger condition and recorded fill. A current spread cannot reconstruct a past Ask price.
  4. Ask the broker to review the relevant order evidence through its official support channel. Keep account records private; do not send passwords or verification codes.

There is no universal spread threshold or stop-distance adjustment suitable for every account. A rebate does not establish that an execution was correct; keep eligibility and settlement checks separate.

Frequently asked questions

Why can spreads widen around rollover or news?

Available liquidity and pricing uncertainty can change. Check the instrument's schedule and the actual quotes; there is no guaranteed widening amount or recovery time.

Does 20 points always mean 20 pips?

No. Confirm the point size and pip convention for the symbol. Under the example assumptions above, 20 points equals 2 pips.

Does a wider spread always trigger a stop loss?

No. The relevant trigger price must reach the order condition. Check the order direction and symbol rules, rather than treating spread widening alone as a trigger.

Is spread widening the same as slippage?

No. Spread is the gap between simultaneous quotes; slippage concerns the fill relative to a reference price. Review them separately for the event in question.
